Do you know the impact telehealth is having on your company? Measuring the strength of your telehealth programs and services is key to a successful long-term growth strategy. With this data you’ll be able to track the health of provider adoption and utilization, appointments completed or no-shows, and revenue metrics on a provider and company level. You can begin to understand whether your company is interoperable, meaning that technology is connected and integrated for better care quality and enhanced clinical outcomes.
Behavioral health leaders recognize the demand for robust analytics tools to help them deliver better mental healthcare, but finding the right tools to implement, track, and translate this data into proactive outcomes is where leaders are facing the biggest challenge. Behavioral health leaders need to make sure that this information is “accessible and digestible” to providers and patients alike. Providers can then use this data to proactively improve care quality, and their companies can use this data to make large-scale changes to how care is delivered.
In the next two sections, we examine what behavioral health leaders can do to implement data and analytics tools in their companies and use this information to improve care. We look at:
Behavioral health providers are “burning out as they try to manage information overload, meet excessive data entry requirements, and deal with the ever-present fear of missing an important detail or data point.” The physician suicide rate is double than that of the public, with 64% of providers reporting excessive burnout annually. The biggest concern for providers is excessive data entry requirements and inaccessible information.
Siloed systems stand in the way of better care. Companies that utilize separate tools, such as an EHR, a video conferencing software, email, and form and e-signature solutions are working with disparate platforms that only perpetuate a disjointed patient and provider experience. Instead, behavioral health companies need to bring systems together when possible. By consolidating the patient experience and the available data they can ensure they meet increasing demand for care, while making it easier for providers to deliver the care that patients need.
There is a growing demand from healthcare companies to integrate their tech stacks to synchronize data entry and standardize that data between various software. Integrated software supports quick and easy clinical decision making by making it simple for providers to access accurate data that is consolidated and immediately available. To integrate their systems, behavioral health leaders can look to using APIs. An API is an application programming interface that connects technology so staff no longer have to enter data into multiple systems; rather, they enter data into one system with the data automatically flowing into their other platforms. APIs automatically minimizes excessive data entry requirements and inaccessible information by reducing the steps required to capture and access information when needed. Author Judith Teich says it best: “Making progress on helping people with serious mental illness will depend not just on new drugs but on good information on which effective policies and treatment regimens can be based.”
The goal of tracking patient health outcomes is two-fold; to understand the patient’s historical health and capture their day-to-day outcomes, while also supporting proactive care decision- making. GAD-7s, PHQ-9s, and other therapeutic assessments can help providers monitor the micro-changes in their patient’s health. Capturing this data gives providers better insight into their patients and helps them sense a patient’s shifting health so they can prepare personalized treatment plans.
For example, researchers at Kaiser Permanente were able to use data from an EHR to build an analytics model predicting the suicide risk of patients within 90 days of a visit to provider. The model first identified the “5% of the test population with the highest suicide risk, and for those who attempted suicide, 43% were identified as high risk, while 48% of suicide deaths were from the same test group.” Being able to accurately predict patient health using data is essential for providers who are delivering care to high-risk behavioral health patients, especially those in outpatient programs.
Not only can consolidating this data on a company-wide level help companies improve their care models, but it can also inform how the company makes strategic decisions to better serve their patients and prospective patients. For example, perhaps your analytics show that providers are treating more patients in the evenings, or more patients book appointments in the summer months. By seeing this information in real-time, you can proactively make informed decisions and adjust provider schedules based on the needs of your patient base. Aligning your care model to better serve increasing patient demand, as well as the ever-changing mental health industry, is an important step in improving both care quality and potential company growth.
Data software for healthcare lags way behind other industries, and this lag has major consequences for patients, providers, and companies. Providers continue to leverage disconnected solutions to inefficiently treat patients, track data, verify insurance, and schedule appointments. Often, this work takes place over the phone, back-and-forth email communication, and manual data entry. This administrative burden has created a 52% increase in overtime hours, resulting in an additional $17M in labor expenses for behavioral health and addictions organizations. With accessible data and systems that enable providers to quickly access the information they need to provide better care, companies can surely improve retention rates and increase revenue as they continue to grow their businesses with integrated solutions that meet patient and provider demand.
